Essay 2

Do you think that technological advancement has brought more harm than good? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

There has been a widespread perception that technological developments are nothing but a perilous current, with people becoming disillusioned with their seeming benefits. However, I completely disagree with the statement that technology has brought more harm than good. Although technology has some apparent perils, it has transformed many aspects of human life for the better and has brought invaluable benefits that outweigh its potential downsides.

First of all, the substantial transformations that have taken place in the world of medicine and healthcare cannot be overlooked. Technology these days allows us to detect many diseases at early stages and treat them accordingly. Better screening, less invasive surgeries, greater precision during surgical procedures, and many other advancements have improved both doctors’ and patients’ experiences over the past decades. The impossible has become possible thanks to technology. One prominent illustration is the possibility of fetal surgery, whereby an unborn child can undergo surgery to prevent or treat certain congenital abnormalities. Genetic technologies may also allow some abnormalities to be addressed before birth, increasing the chances of a baby being born healthy. This would not have been possible had technology not developed.

Moreover, the benefits of technology in education are noteworthy too. Access to a myriad of resources online has made knowledge and information accessible to almost anyone. While in the past only people with access to libraries or books could easily learn and expand their knowledge, information is now just one Google search away. Moreover, online and remote studies have made it possible for anyone, even those living in the most distant and inaccessible parts of the world, to have access to education. This is not to mention tools that automate and facilitate the learning process. For example, students can use Google Notebook to upload their class notes, PDFs, or web links and generate instant summaries, study guides, and audio or video overviews that explain the material to them.

Nevertheless, many people are concerned about the harm technology can cause. It is undeniable that many people have become more isolated and less sociable. Technology has also contributed to increasingly sedentary lifestyles and, hence, indirectly to obesity, while excessive reliance on technological devices can lead to addiction. I still believe that these dangers are mostly illustrations of the human tendency to overindulge and can therefore be controlled or even reversed, whereas the benefits of technology cannot easily be surpassed.

In conclusion, although technology and its advancements have been widely criticised, with many focusing more on their harms than their benefits, I believe that these concerns should not overshadow the unmatched benefits technology has brought to human life, as illustrated above.
