Essay 1

Some people go shopping as a form of recreation. It has replaced many activities that people used to enjoy as hobbies. Is this a positive or negative development? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Over the past few decades, the number of people who shop for recreational purposes has skyrocketed. Although this pastime may have therapeutic effects for some individuals, I believe that, overall, this trend is predominantly negative. This essay will explain why the drawbacks of shopping as a leisure activity outweigh its apparent benefits.

The primary reason why shopping can be a negative hobby compared with other pastimes is its addictive nature. Nowadays, unlike in the past, many people no longer shop out of necessity but rather to reward themselves psychologically or to suppress negative emotions. For example, many women buy skincare products or new clothes when they are going through difficult times. In such cases, shopping becomes merely a psychological coping mechanism that allows people to avoid dealing with their emotions and escape reality. Over time, this behaviour may develop into compulsive buying disorder. I believe that if people opted for healthier activities, such as yoga or hiking in nature, instead of shopping, they would be more likely to experience a genuine sense of fulfilment.

The second reason for my stance is the strain this habit may place on people’s finances. Shopping on a weekly or even daily basis purely for recreation is likely to result in unnecessary expenditure. For instance, many people buy a new handbag or a new pair of shoes whenever they want to unwind. However, the money spent on such non-essential purchases could instead be saved for major expenses, such as buying a car or a home. Instead, people should learn to relax through cheaper or even free activities, such as practising yoga in the park, going for a run, or hiking. Not only are these activities free, but they also improve overall physical well-being.

In conclusion, although many people choose shopping as a way to relax after a hectic week, I believe this trend is largely negative because it may lead to shopping addiction and place unnecessary strain on people’s finances. There are countless healthier, less detrimental, and more fulfilling ways to unwind.
