IELTS Writing Task 1: How to Describe a Table for Band 7+

IELTS tables can look intimidating because they often contain a lot of numbers.

You might see:

4 years × 5 categories

or

5 countries × 4 types of data

and immediately think:

Do I have to describe all of this?

No.

A strong IELTS Task 1 answer does not report every cell in the table.

Your job is to:

understand the table → identify the main patterns → group related data → compare important figures → support your comparisons with selected numbers

That is the central skill.

For Band 7+, your report should normally follow this structure:

Introduction → Overview → Body Paragraph 1 → Body Paragraph 2

And before you write anything, you need to analyse the table.


1. First Understand What the Table Shows

Before looking at individual numbers, identify four things:

What is being measured?

Who or what is being compared?

What time period is shown?

What unit is used?

For example, imagine a table showing:

international tourists

for:

holidays / business / visiting friends and relatives / education / other purposes

in:

2010 / 2014 / 2018 / 2022

measured in:

thousands

You now understand the basic structure of the table.

Your introduction can then be very simple:

The table compares the number of international tourists who visited a particular country for five different purposes in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. The figures are given in thousands.

Do not analyse the data in your introduction.

Just tell the reader what the table presents.


2. The Overview Is the Most Important Part

A clear overview is essential for a high Task Achievement score.

The overview answers:

What are the biggest things I notice when I look at the whole table?

Do not start hunting for small differences.

Look for the big picture.

For most tables, look for:

the highest category

the lowest category

general increases or decreases

categories moving in opposite directions

something that remains stable

a category that overtakes another

a particularly large increase or decrease

a change in ranking

You usually need about two or three major observations.

For example:

Overall, the number of tourists increased in all five categories over the period shown. Holidays were by far the most common purpose of travel throughout the period, while other reasons accounted for the smallest number of visitors.

That is already a strong overview.

It tells us:

general trend: everything increased

highest: holidays

lowest: other purposes

You could then add one more major feature:

Holiday tourism also experienced a much larger increase than any of the other categories.

Now the examiner can see that you understood the table rather than simply reading individual numbers.


3. Don’t Put Lots of Numbers in the Overview

Compare these two overviews.

Weak overview

Overall, holidays increased from 620,000 to 1.12 million, business increased from 210,000 to 290,000, education increased from 90,000 to 150,000 and other purposes increased from 60,000 to 100,000.

This is not really an overview.

It is a list of details.

Better overview

Overall, all five categories experienced growth, with holidays remaining by far the most common reason for visiting throughout the period. Other purposes consistently recorded the lowest figures, while holiday tourism saw the most substantial increase.

This tells us the pattern.

The detailed figures can come later.

Think:

Overview = picture

Body paragraphs = evidence


4. The Most Important Table Skill: Group the Data

This is where many IELTS students struggle.

They write:

Holidays were 620,000 in 2010. Business was 210,000. Visiting friends was 180,000. Education was 90,000. Other was 60,000.

Then:

In 2014 holidays were 780,000. Business was…

This is basically converting the table into sentences.

It is not good data selection.

Instead, find relationships.

Suppose the table contains:

You could organise your body paragraphs like this:

Body 1: Holidays + business
Body 2: Friends/relatives + education + other

Why?

Because holidays are clearly the dominant category and deserve detailed attention, while business provides a useful comparison.

Then the smaller categories can be grouped together.

There is no rule saying:

“Always describe rows 1–2 in Body 1 and rows 3–5 in Body 2.”

Your grouping should reflect the patterns in the data.


5. Different Tables Require Different Grouping Strategies

There are several common ways to group information.

Group by trend

Suppose:

electricity ↑

renewables ↑

petroleum ↓

coal ↓

You could group the rising categories together and the falling categories together.

For example:

Body 1: natural gas + electricity

Body 2: petroleum + coal + renewables

Or you could focus on the dominant categories first and then the smaller ones.

Both can work if the organisation is logical.

Group by ranking

Suppose four countries have:

USA — much higher

UK — second highest

Canada — lower but increasing

Australia — lowest

You might write:

Body 1: USA + UK

Body 2: Canada + Australia

This makes sense because the first two begin with much larger figures.

Group by opposite movements

Suppose transport data show:

bus ↑

train ↑

bicycle ↑

but:

walking ↓

motorbike ↓

other ↓

This gives you a natural contrast.

Group by an important relationship

Suppose:

cash ↓ dramatically

while:

debit cards ↑ dramatically

and debit cards eventually overtake cash.

Those two categories should probably be discussed together because their relationship is one of the most important features of the table.

This is exactly the kind of thinking you need for Band 7+.

Do not ask:

Which row should I describe first?

Ask:

Which figures belong together?


6. Look for Relationships, Not Just Numbers

A good Task 1 writer sees:

62% and 24%

and thinks:

Cash was more than twice as common as debit cards.

They see:

11% → 24%

and think:

Credit card use more than doubled.

They see:

8,500 versus 4,300

and think:

Natural gas consumption was almost twice that of electricity.

They see:

Canada: 3,900
UK: 3,810

and think:

Canada narrowly overtook the UK.

The comparison is often more valuable than simply reporting both numbers separately.

Instead of:

Cash was 62%. Debit cards were 24%.

write:

In 2005, almost two-thirds of people paid in cash, at 62%, compared with just 24% who used debit cards.

Instead of:

The USA had 16,870 libraries and Australia had 1,250.

you could write:

The USA had by far the largest number of public libraries, at 16,870, while Australia recorded the lowest figure, at just 1,250.

One sentence now contains:

two figures + ranking + comparison

That is much more efficient.


7. You Do Not Need Every Number

Imagine a category changes:

8,500 → 8,900 → 9,200 → 8,700

You could write every number:

Natural gas consumption stood at 8,500 kWh in 2000, increased to 8,900 in 2005, rose to 9,200 in 2010 and then decreased to 8,700 in 2020.

This is acceptable because the intermediate peak is important.

But imagine another category changes:

180 → 200 → 220 → 240

You probably do not need every figure.

You could simply write:

The number of visitors seeing friends and relatives rose steadily from 180,000 in 2010 to 240,000 in 2022.

That captures the trend perfectly.

A Band 7+ writer selects data.

Do not assume:

More numbers = higher score.

Sometimes more numbers simply make the answer harder to read.


8. Pay Special Attention to Peaks, Crossovers and Changes in Ranking

Some numbers are more important than others.

Consider:

Cash

62% → 41% → 22%

Debit cards

24% → 36% → 43%

The important story is not simply:

Cash fell and debit cards rose.

Something more significant happened:

Debit cards overtook cash.

That belongs in your answer.

For example:

Debit card use increased steadily from 24% in 2005 to 43% in 2025, overtaking cash to become the leading payment method by the end of the period.

Similarly:

Canada: 2,890 → 3,900

UK: 4,710 → 3,810

The important observation is:

Canada eventually surpassed the UK.

When analysing a table, circle situations where:

A becomes higher than B

the highest category changes

the lowest category changes

a figure reaches a peak

something more than doubles/halves

These are excellent key features.


9. How to Write the Introduction

Your introduction should normally be one sentence.

You need to paraphrase the task.

For example:

Task:

The table below shows the percentage of people who used different methods of payment in a particular country in 2005, 2015 and 2025.

Introduction:

The table compares the percentages of people who used four different payment methods in a particular country in 2005, 2015 and 2025.

Simple.

Accurate.

No unnecessary language.

You do not need:

The given tabular representation elucidates…

That does not improve your score.

Natural academic English is better.

Useful introduction verbs include:

compares

shows

illustrates

provides information about

presents data on

For tables containing several categories, compares is often particularly useful.


10. How to Write the Overview

A very useful way to think about the overview is:

Overall trend + highest/lowest + special feature

Not every table will contain all three, but it is a good starting point.

Example 1

Overall, all five categories increased over the period shown. Holidays remained by far the most common purpose of travel, whereas other reasons consistently accounted for the fewest visitors.

Example 2

Overall, natural gas remained the most widely consumed source of energy, despite a slight decline towards the end of the period. While electricity and renewable energy use increased, petroleum and coal consumption fell.

Example 3

Overall, there was a clear shift away from cash towards cashless payment methods. Cash was initially dominant, but debit cards became the most popular form of payment by the final year.

Notice how these overviews are different.

Do not memorise one sentence such as:

Overall, it can be clearly seen that…

and use it for every task.

The important part is what comes after “Overall”.


11. Writing Body Paragraph 1

Now support your overview with figures.

Suppose your major story is:

cash ↓

debit cards ↑

and they eventually cross.

You could write:

In 2005, almost two-thirds of people paid in cash, at 62%, compared with just 24% who used debit cards. However, the proportion of cash users fell sharply to 41% in 2015 and then to only 22% in 2025. By contrast, debit card use increased steadily, rising from 24% to 36% and eventually reaching 43%. As a result, debit cards overtook cash to become the leading payment method by the end of the period.

This paragraph works because every sentence is connected to the same idea:

the reversal in popularity between cash and debit cards

It does not jump randomly between categories.


12. Writing Body Paragraph 2

Now describe the remaining categories.

For example:

Credit cards and mobile payments also experienced considerable growth. The percentage of credit card users more than doubled, from 11% in 2005 to 24% in 2025, meaning that this method also surpassed cash in the final year. Meanwhile, mobile payments remained the least common option throughout the period, despite rising from just 3% to 11%.

Again, we are not merely listing figures.

We are identifying:

growth

doubling

overtaking

remaining lowest

Those are relationships.


13. Learn to Describe Numbers Flexibly

Avoid repeating:

the number was…

the number was…

the number was…

For numbers of people/items:

the number of

The number of tourists increased.

the figure for

The figure for business travel remained relatively stable.

stood at

The figure stood at 620,000.

reached

It reached 1.12 million in 2022.

rose to

The number rose to 950,000.

14. Be Careful With “Amount” and “Number”

This is an important grammar point.

Use number with countable nouns:

the number of tourists

the number of libraries

the number of students

Use amount with uncountable quantities:

the amount of energy consumed

the amount of money spent

Do not write:

the amount of tourists

Say:

the number of tourists


15. Useful Language for Increases

For dynamic tables showing changes over time:

Verbs

rise

Examples

The figure rose steadily from 180,000 to 240,000.

Electricity consumption increased consistently.

The proportion climbed from 6% to 10%.

Do not constantly search for dramatic synonyms.

IELTS rewards accuracy and flexibility, not unusual vocabulary for its own sake.


16. Useful Language for Decreases

Verbs

fall

Examples

Coal consumption fell sharply.

The proportion declined considerably.

Car use decreased gradually.

Be careful with the size of change.

Do not write:

plummeted

if the figure changes from 45% to 43%.

That is inaccurate.

Vocabulary must match the data.


17. Describe the Degree of Change

Small change:

slightly

marginally

a slight increase

Moderate/steady change:

gradually

steadily

consistently

Large change:

considerably

significantly

substantially

sharply

For example:

Gas consumption rose slightly.

Business travel increased gradually.

Cash use fell sharply.

The adverb needs to reflect the actual numbers.


18. Powerful Comparison Structures

You need comparisons because the IELTS task specifically asks you to make comparisons where relevant.

Learn structures such as:

Higher/lower than

The figure for the USA was considerably higher than that for Canada.

Twice as much/many

Gas consumption was almost twice as high as electricity consumption.

There were nearly twice as many X as Y.

Three times

Holiday tourism was almost three times the figure for business travel.

Compared with

62% used cash, compared with 24% who used debit cards.

While / whereas

While cash use declined, debit card use increased.

Canada experienced growth, whereas the UK saw a steady fall.

respectively

Bus and train use stood at 18% and 15%, respectively.

Respectively is particularly useful when comparing two or more figures efficiently.


19. Use “By Far” for Very Large Differences

Compare:

Holidays were the most popular.

with:

Holidays were by far the most popular.

“By far” tells us that the difference is substantial.

Similarly:

The USA had by far the largest number of libraries.

Use it only when the table genuinely shows a large gap.


20. Learn “Overtake” and “Surpass”

These are extremely useful when rankings change.

overtake

Debit cards overtook cash.

surpass

Canada surpassed the UK.

narrowly surpass

Canada narrowly surpassed the UK.

become the leading…

Debit cards became the leading payment method.

become the second-highest…

X became the second-highest category.

These verbs allow you to describe the relationship between categories, not just individual movements.


21. Use “Remain” When Ranking Does Not Change

Suppose one category stays highest:

Cars remained the most popular means of transport throughout the period.

Or lowest:

Mobile payments remained the least common method.

Or relatively unchanged:

The figure remained relatively stable.

“Remain” is extremely useful because many tables show something that changes numerically but keeps the same position.

For example:

Mobile payments increased from 3% to 11% but remained the least common payment method.

That sentence gives us both:

change

and

ranking


22. Use “Despite” to Show an Interesting Contrast

Compare:

Mobile payments increased. They were still the least common.

Better:

Mobile payments remained the least common method, despite rising from 3% to 11%.

Or:

Cars remained the most popular means of transport, despite a noticeable decline in their use.

This type of grammar is useful because it allows you to connect two important features naturally.

Other useful structures include:

Although the figure declined, it remained the highest.

While coal consumption decreased, renewable energy use increased.

Whereas cash was dominant initially, debit cards ranked first by 2025.

These structures help demonstrate grammatical range.


23. Dynamic Tables vs Static Tables

Not every table contains years.

This distinction matters.

Dynamic table

A dynamic table shows change over time.

For example:

2000 → 2005 → 2010 → 2020

You can use:

increased

declined

remained stable

peaked

overtook

rose steadily

Static table

A static table compares categories at one point in time.

You cannot talk about increases or decreases if there is no time change.

Instead use:

was higher than

recorded the largest figure

accounted for

was approximately twice as high as

ranked first

had the lowest proportion

Never invent a “trend” when the table does not show time.


24. Choose the Correct Tense

If all dates are in the past:

The figure rose.

Cars were the most popular.

If the table describes the present:

The figure is higher.

If it contains future projections:

The figure is expected to rise.

The number is projected to reach

Your tense should come from the dates in the table.


25. Don’t Explain Why the Numbers Changed

Task 1 is not Task 2.

If a table shows declining cash use, do not write:

This probably happened because young people prefer smartphones and technology has developed rapidly.

The table does not tell you that.

You should report:

Cash use declined considerably, while mobile payments became increasingly common.

Do not invent causes, opinions or explanations.

Describe what the data show.


26. Don’t Give Your Opinion

Avoid:

I think this is a positive development.

Surprisingly, people used a lot of gas.

Unfortunately, coal consumption decreased.

Task 1 requires an objective report.

Write:

Coal consumption declined steadily.

Not:

Fortunately, coal consumption declined steadily.


27. Don’t Describe the Table Row by Row Mechanically

This is probably the most important mistake to avoid.

Weak structure:

2010: describe everything
2014: describe everything
2018: describe everything
2022: describe everything

The result usually becomes repetitive.

Better structure:

Group related categories and compare them across the entire period.

For example:

Body 1: cash versus debit cards

Body 2: credit cards and mobile payments

This allows the reader to follow each trend from beginning to end.


28. What Band 7 Grammar Looks Like

You do not need every sentence to be extremely complicated.

You need a variety of structures used accurately.

For example:

Simple

Cash use fell sharply.

Complex with while

While cash use declined considerably, debit card use increased.

Relative clause

The USA, which had the highest figure throughout the period, experienced a slight overall decline.

Despite

Cars remained the most popular option despite a fall in their share.

Before + -ing

Gas consumption peaked in 2010 before falling slightly in the final year.

Result

Debit card use reached 43%, making it the most popular payment method.

A mixture like this demonstrates much more control than writing ten identical sentences.


29. A Band 7+ Four-Paragraph Structure

For most tables:

Paragraph 1 — Introduction

Paraphrase what the table shows.

The table compares the percentages of people using four different payment methods in a particular country in 2005, 2015 and 2025.

Paragraph 2 — Overview

Give 2–3 major features.

Overall, there was a clear shift away from cash towards cashless payment methods. Although cash was initially dominant, its use declined considerably, while all three alternatives became more common. Debit cards were the most popular method by the final year.

Paragraph 3 — Major categories

Describe the most important relationship.

In 2005, almost two-thirds of people paid in cash, at 62%, compared with just 24% who used debit cards. However, cash use fell sharply…

Paragraph 4 — Remaining categories

Credit cards and mobile payments also experienced growth…

That is enough.

You do not need:

Conclusion

Task 1 already has an overview.
