Overall, the number of international visitors increased in all five countries over the period shown. France attracted the largest number of tourists in both years, while Italy received the fewest. Spain experienced the biggest increase in absolute terms.
In 2015, France was the most popular destination, receiving 84 million international tourists. Spain ranked second with 68 million visitors, while the figure for the United States was slightly lower, at 60 million. China attracted 56 million tourists, compared with 50 million in Italy, the lowest figure among the five countries.
By 2023, tourist numbers had risen across all the destinations. France remained in first place, with its figure climbing by 11 million to 95 million. Spain saw a more substantial increase of 14 million, reaching 82 million, while the number of visitors to the United States grew to 73 million. More moderate growth was recorded in China and Italy, where tourist numbers rose to 65 million and 58 million respectively.
