IELTS Writing Task 1: How to Describe Pie Charts for Band 7+
Pie charts look simple, but a strong Task 1 answer is not just a list of percentages. To reach Band 7+, you need to show that you can:
identify the main features → group information → compare important figures → use accurate percentage language
The most important rule is:
Don’t describe every number separately. Describe the picture the numbers create.
1. Understand What a Pie Chart Shows
A pie chart normally shows how a whole is divided into categories.
The whole usually represents 100%.
For example:
Watching TV — 30%
Family and friends — 25%
Exercise — 20%
Reading — 15%
Other hobbies — 10%
Together:
30 + 25 + 20 + 15 + 10 = 100%
So your job is usually to describe:
the largest category + the smallest category + important similarities/differences + interesting comparisons
2. Use the Standard 4-Paragraph Structure
For most pie-chart questions, use:
Paragraph 1 — Introduction
Paraphrase the question.
Paragraph 2 — Overview
Describe 2–3 major features without giving lots of details.
Paragraph 3 — Details
Describe and compare the first group of important figures.
Paragraph 4 — Details
Describe and compare the remaining figures.
This structure is simple, clear and reliable for Band 7+.
3. Writing the Introduction
Your introduction should simply tell the reader what the charts show.
Question:
The pie charts show how men and women spend their free time.
You can write:
The pie charts compare how male and female adults spend their free time across five different activities.
Notice that we didn’t copy the question exactly.
Useful verbs
Instead of always using show, use:
compare
illustrate
present
provide information about
show the proportions of
For example:
The charts compare the proportions of men and women who prefer different leisure activities.
The pie charts illustrate how household expenditure is distributed among six categories.
But don’t force complicated synonyms. Compare and show are perfectly good IELTS words.
4. The Overview Is Extremely Important
A good overview is essential for a strong Task Achievement score.
The overview answers:
What are the most important things I notice when I look at the charts?
Don’t start listing every percentage.
Suppose we have:

A weak overview would be:
Overall, TV was 30% for men and 25% for women, while family and friends accounted for 25% and 30%.
You’re already describing details.
A much better overview is:
Overall, watching TV or videos was the most popular activity among men, whereas women were most likely to spend their free time with family and friends. However, the two groups showed identical preferences for the remaining three activities.
This tells us the big picture.
5. What Should You Look for in the Overview?
When you first see the charts, ask yourself:
What is the largest category?
Cars were by far the most common form of transport.
Online news accounted for the largest proportion.
What is the smallest category?
Cycling was the least popular option.
Radio represented the smallest proportion.
Are there major differences?
Men were considerably more likely to choose X, whereas women preferred Y.
Are there similarities?
The figures for the remaining categories were broadly similar.
Did something increase or decrease?
For charts showing different years:
Cash became considerably less popular, while card payments gained popularity.
Did the ranking change?
Although cash was the dominant payment method initially, debit cards became the most widely used option by the end of the period.
These are features, not merely numbers.
6. Essential Pie-Chart Vocabulary
You need several ways to say X was 30%.
Account for
Television accounted for 30% of the total.
Make up
Television made up 30% of the total.
Represent
Television represented 30% of responses.
Constitute
Online purchases constituted 35% of total spending.
This is more formal, but don’t overuse it.
The proportion/share of
The proportion of people choosing television was 30%.
The share of online payments stood at 35%.
For Band 7, variation is useful:
Cars accounted for 40%, while buses made up 25%. Trains represented a further 20%.
7. Learn to Describe Percentages Naturally
You don’t always need to write the exact percentage.
50%
half
Half of respondents chose this option.
25%
a quarter
A quarter of commuters travelled by bus.
75%
three quarters
Three quarters of households owned a car.
33%
approximately a third

just under a third

just over a third

a fifth

one in ten
But don’t replace every percentage with a fraction. Mix them naturally.
Online shopping accounted for just over a third (35%) of purchases.
8. Compare — Don’t Just Report
This is one of the biggest differences between weaker and stronger answers.
Instead of:
Men: 30%. Women: 20%.
Write:
The figure for men was 10 percentage points higher than that for women.
Or:
Men were considerably more likely than women to choose this activity.
Or:
This category accounted for 30% among men, compared with 20% among women.
Useful comparison structures
X compared with Y
30% of men chose this activity, compared with 20% of women.
whereas
Television accounted for 30% among men, whereas the figure for women was 20%.
while
40% travelled by car, while only 15% used the train.
by contrast
Cars were dominant in Country A. By contrast, public transport was the leading option in Country B.
twice as high as
The figure for men was twice as high as that for women.
half the figure for
At 10%, the figure for women was half that for men.
9. Percentage vs Percentage Point
This distinction is very useful.
If something rises:
20% → 30%
It increased by:
10 percentage points
NOT necessarily “10%.”
So:
The figure increased by 10 percentage points, from 20% to 30%.
This is precise academic language.
10. Comparing Two Countries
Suppose:
Japan
Car — 50%
Public transport — 28%
Bicycle — 10%
Walking — 7%
Work from home — 5%
Brazil
Car — 20%
Public transport — 40%
Bicycle — 5%
Walking — 25%
Work from home — 10%
Don’t write one complete paragraph about Japan and then another completely isolated paragraph about Brazil if useful comparisons can be made directly.
Better:
In Japan, exactly half of commuters travelled by car, compared with only 20% in Brazil. By contrast, public transport was considerably more popular in Brazil, accounting for 40%, versus 28% in Japan.
This demonstrates comparison clearly.
11. Comparing Two Years
Pie charts often show change over time.
Imagine:

Your overview could say:
Overall, there was a clear shift away from cash towards cashless forms of payment. While cash was by far the dominant method initially, debit cards had become the most popular option by the end of the period.
That’s much stronger than:
Cash decreased and debit cards increased.

12. Comparing Men and Women
For gender comparisons, avoid repeating:
Men… Women… Men… Women…
Use:
among men
among women
male respondents
female respondents
the figure for men/women
their male/female counterparts
both groups
For example:
Watching television accounted for 30% among men, compared with 25% among women.
Women were slightly more likely to spend time with family and friends than their male counterparts.
The figures for exercise were identical for both groups, at 20%.
13. Ranking Categories
Pie charts are excellent for ranking language.
Use:
the largest / highest proportion
Online sources accounted for the largest proportion.
the second-largest category
Television was the second-largest category.
ranked first/second
Public transport ranked first, at 40%.
followed by
Cars were the most popular option, followed by buses.
the smallest / lowest proportion
Cycling represented the smallest proportion.
14. Useful Language for Small and Large Differences
Small difference

Car use was considerably higher in Japan than in Brazil.
15. Group Your Information
A Band 7 answer should not feel like:
A was 30%. B was 20%. C was 15%. D was 10%.
Instead, group related information.
For example:
Television and socialising were the two dominant leisure activities, accounting for 30% and 25% respectively. By comparison, exercise represented a smaller share, at 20%, while reading and other hobbies made up just 15% and 10%.
Now the reader sees relationships between the figures.
16. Use “Respectively” Correctly
Respectively means in the same order.
Men and women spent 30% and 25% of their free time watching television, respectively.
This means:
Men → 30%
Women → 25%
Another example:
Exercise and reading accounted for 20% and 15%, respectively.
Exercise → 20%
Reading → 15%
It is useful, but don’t use it repeatedly.
17. Don’t Explain Why
IELTS Academic Task 1 asks you to report information, not explain causes.
Don’t write:
More women spent time with family because women generally care more about relationships.
The chart doesn’t tell you this.
Don’t speculate:
This was probably because public transport was cheaper.
Again, not given.
Simply report:
Public transport was considerably more popular in Brazil than in Japan.
18. Don’t Give Your Opinion
Avoid:
I think this is surprising.
In my opinion, people should exercise more.
It is good that more people use public transport.
Task 1 is objective.
19. Don’t Describe Every Tiny Detail in the Overview
Your overview should contain the big picture.
Bad:
Overall, cars accounted for 50%, buses for 28%, bicycles for 10%, walking for 7% and working from home for 5%.
That’s not really an overview. It’s a data list.
Better:
Overall, cars dominated commuting in Japan, whereas public transport was the leading mode in Brazil. Walking was also considerably more common in Brazil, while cycling accounted for relatively small proportions in both countries.
20. A Reliable Band 7 Template
Don’t memorize this word for word, but understand the structure.
Introduction
The pie charts compare [what] in [place/groups/time].
Overview
Overall, [largest/main feature], whereas [important contrast]. It is also noticeable that [second major feature].
Body 1
In [group/year/country], X accounted for the largest proportion, at __%. This was followed by Y, at __%. By comparison, Z represented __%, while A made up just __%.
Body 2
The pattern was somewhat different in [second group/year/country]. X stood at __%, compared with __% in [first group]. Meanwhile, Y accounted for __%. The figures for A and B were __% and __%, respectively.
Use this as a framework, not as a memorized answer.
